Summary

10 ans que je n'avais pas lu de Zola， alors qu'au lycée il a participé à mes premiers émois littéraires。 J'ai beaucoup aimé revenir aux origines de personnages que je connaissais déjà et voir se ramifier les R-M à partir d'Adélaïde et de sa névrose originelle。 Les jeux d'échos， héréditaires mais pas que， me plaisent beaucoup chez Zola。 Notamment dans ce tome comment la petite histoire de Plassans qui se fait l'écho de la grande histoire de Paris ; dans un espace considérablement plus étriqué où 10 ans que je n'avais pas lu de Zola， alors qu'au lycée il a participé à mes premiers émois littéraires。 J'ai beaucoup aimé revenir aux origines de personnages que je connaissais déjà et voir se ramifier les R-M à partir d'Adélaïde et de sa névrose originelle。 Les jeux d'échos， héréditaires mais pas que， me plaisent beaucoup chez Zola。 Notamment dans ce tome comment la petite histoire de Plassans qui se fait l'écho de la grande histoire de Paris ; dans un espace considérablement plus étriqué où les personnalités n'ont rien du magnifique héroïque。 L'écho de la tombe "ci gist Mary" par trois fois， les effets d'annonce de La Curée， le dernier paragraphe de l'excipit où les taches rouges se font écho， entérinant la fortune et le succès dans le bain de sang。Les personnages féminins sont comme chez Balzac particulièrement réussis。 Je pense bien sûr à la scène où Miette meurt sublime， en rouge， en Liberté guidant le peuple （hautement symbolique， avec l'avènement de l'Empire）; à la vitalité de tante Dide ou encore à la malice et l'intelligence de Félicité， notamment dans ce moment de la lettre d'Eugène où elle manipule à la Merteuil Vuillet et son mari Pierre。 。。。more

La Fortune des Rougons est le récit de l’ambition d’ascension sociale sur une trame de fond des grandes perturbations politiques d’une époque。 L’ambition sans scrupule est combinée à un héritage morbide。 Si l’époque moderne élève l’ambition et la méritocratie sur un piédestal， et en fait le fondement de l’ordre politique et social moderne， ce roman est un exercice qui vise à renverser cette image。 L’homme réussi n’est pas souvent l’homme le plus talentueux ni le plus méritant， mais c’est certain La Fortune des Rougons est le récit de l’ambition d’ascension sociale sur une trame de fond des grandes perturbations politiques d’une époque。 L’ambition sans scrupule est combinée à un héritage morbide。 Si l’époque moderne élève l’ambition et la méritocratie sur un piédestal， et en fait le fondement de l’ordre politique et social moderne， ce roman est un exercice qui vise à renverser cette image。 L’homme réussi n’est pas souvent l’homme le plus talentueux ni le plus méritant， mais c’est certainement l’homme qui sait le plus exploiter les fissures qui brusquement s’ouvrent dans un système jadis très rigide。 Loin d’être motivée par le désir d’accroitre la gloire de soi， l’ambition peut cacher la haine et la rancœur envers autrui， la volupté de les voir détruis。 A la veille du coup d’état menant la France au Second Empire， tout un pays est déchiré en une lutte de classes acharnée。 La classe populaire rêve de l’égalité et de la justice， mais également d’un monde ou on ne travaille pas， vivant tranquillement dans sa paresse。 L’aristocratie se réfugie dans la réaction， pour défendre ses privilèges hérités。 La bourgeoisie， symbole de l’ambition moderne， se lie à qui se présente en allié， ouvrier ou marquis， l’essentiel est de se tailler une part du pouvoir。 Indépendamment des idéologies et des idéaux beaux et naïfs， ce qui mobilise l’homme peut être sa nature la plus vicieuse， sa jalousie des richesses des autres， la satisfaction qu’il trouve à voir les autres souffrir。Zola présente une vision de la nature humaine très sombre et pessimiste。 Des personnages qui sombrent dans les extrêmes de la lâcheté， la paresse， la jalousie et la haine。 Il s’attarde sur la description des ces rouages intimes de la condition humaine， avec une grande virtuosité， malgré sa nature illogique， volatile。 Le seul homme vertueux semble celui qui est indifférent à ce monde impermanent des gens consommés par leur vices。 C’est l’homme absorbé dans une tache d’observation et de détachement， vivant sub specie aeternitatis。Loin des justifications métaphysiques du comportement humain， Zola introduit la fatalité biologique et l’influence du milieu。 Il exploite une science de l’hérédité à l’état embryonnaire au XIXéme siècle， dans un croisement curieux entre la littérature et la science。 Ces personnages sont condamnés à un destin de destruction d’eux même et d’autrui， à cause de leur héritage et ces destins sont exposés sans exprimer la moindre sympathie pour eux， ni poser les questions de responsabilité ou de moralité。 Comme si ceci n’a plus d’importance quand on est au fond des turbulences du flot de la vie， emporté par ses forces。 。。。more

Très agréable à lire， comme toujours avec Zola。 Et c'est vraiment intéressant de découvrir l'origine de la famille des Rougon-Macquart， avec la mise en place des personnages-clés， que l'on retrouvera plus tard dans d'autres romans。 Je tique toujours avec la démarche naturaliste / scientifique de Zola， qui en devient parfois forcée， surtout dans ce roman "des origines"， où chaque personnage se voit assigné à un trait de caractère et devient donc。。。 caricatural （et surtout， subit implacablement so Très agréable à lire， comme toujours avec Zola。 Et c'est vraiment intéressant de découvrir l'origine de la famille des Rougon-Macquart， avec la mise en place des personnages-clés， que l'on retrouvera plus tard dans d'autres romans。 Je tique toujours avec la démarche naturaliste / scientifique de Zola， qui en devient parfois forcée， surtout dans ce roman "des origines"， où chaque personnage se voit assigné à un trait de caractère et devient donc。。。 caricatural （et surtout， subit implacablement son hérédité， ce que je trouve un peu désespérant）。 Il faut l'accepter， c'est le jeu avec Zola。Le récit est cependant prenant （les calculs menés par les Rougon pour tirer le meilleur parti des bouleversements politiques de 1851）， émouvant （l'amour entre Miette et Silvère， la vie tragique d'Adélaïde）， et toujours parsemé de sublimes descriptions。 。。。more

Un roman de Zola plaisant， il met en place la fresque des Rougon Macquart avec brio。 Je regrette juste de ne pas assez maîtriser la période historique pour bien saisir les enjeux des insurgés et autres！

It's my first Zola book and the first of the 20 books in the "Les Rougon-Macquart" series （no， I don't intend to read all of them :））。 The narrative style is superb and the turbulent histories of different families in the 1815-1851 period are brilliantly narrated。 I did， however， not develop an attachment to any of the characters in particular， Zola stays mostly above them， psychologizing them from a distance。 At times it felt more like Zola was writing a fictional hisotry of France in the perio It's my first Zola book and the first of the 20 books in the "Les Rougon-Macquart" series （no， I don't intend to read all of them :））。 The narrative style is superb and the turbulent histories of different families in the 1815-1851 period are brilliantly narrated。 I did， however， not develop an attachment to any of the characters in particular， Zola stays mostly above them， psychologizing them from a distance。 At times it felt more like Zola was writing a fictional hisotry of France in the period， at others it seemed he just wanted to cause disgust （with a dose of understanding） for the wannabe elites of a small provincial town， speculating on the outcome of the coup d'etat。Heartly recommended as a guide into the historical sociology of the French revolutions， through the anlaysis of a typical bourgeois family （less so as a novel in itself， although it was very engaging and many parts were even highly entertaining）。 。。。more

J'ai été séduite par ce roman de Zola， qui ouvre la série des Rougon Macquart。 Le traitement de la temporalité est assez habile puisque ce tome nous permet à la fois de connaître l'histoire d'une partie des Rougon Macquart sur plusieurs générations， et de nous attarder sur un épisode historique intéressant : le coup d'Etat de Napoléon III， vu depuis la province。 Deux éléments m'ont un peu ennuyée : la vision qu'a Zola de l'hérédité， que je connaissais déjà （et qui m'a amenée， entre autres， à bou J'ai été séduite par ce roman de Zola， qui ouvre la série des Rougon Macquart。 Le traitement de la temporalité est assez habile puisque ce tome nous permet à la fois de connaître l'histoire d'une partie des Rougon Macquart sur plusieurs générations， et de nous attarder sur un épisode historique intéressant : le coup d'Etat de Napoléon III， vu depuis la province。 Deux éléments m'ont un peu ennuyée : la vision qu'a Zola de l'hérédité， que je connaissais déjà （et qui m'a amenée， entre autres， à bouder cet auteur pendant de longues années） ; le traitement de l'histoire d'amour entre deux enfants。 En effet， cette idylle donnait lieu à des pages un peu niaises ou au contraire malsaines， puisque Zola semble assez fasciné par le corps du personnage féminin， qui est une enfant de treize ans。 Je n'ai rien， cela dit， contre les histoires malsaines ou perverses， bien au contraire。 Ce qui m'a ennuyée ici， c'est la posture hypocrite de l'auteur， qui d'un même mouvement exalte l'innocence， conspue la sexualité hors mariage， et érotise le corps de cette fillette avec un net plaisir。 Il y avait néanmoins de belles pages dans cette histoire d'amour， d'autant que les deux personnages étaient assez intéressants。Ce que j'ai absolument adoré， en revanche， c'est la manière dont Zola décrit les manigances du couple Rougon et le comportement des bourgeois de Plassans lors du coup d'Etat。 L'ironie est féroce， la subtilité des analyses psychologiques relève du génie， les personnages sont très habilement croqués。 La lecture de ces pages， absolument jubilatoire， fait que je veux bien pardonner à ce livre ses défauts。 。。。more

This book is sometimes described as more of a prologue or as challenging because of a surplus of names。 I don't think either is true， and by way of review I'll say why。 For one， there aren't *that* many names， certainly for anyone with either a Dickens or a Faulkner under their belt; while many characters disappear to resurface in other Rougon-Macqaurt novels， their disappearances follow economic logics that enhance The Fortune of the Rougons itself。 It's also at times a very poignant novel。 Sec This book is sometimes described as more of a prologue or as challenging because of a surplus of names。 I don't think either is true， and by way of review I'll say why。 For one， there aren't *that* many names， certainly for anyone with either a Dickens or a Faulkner under their belt; while many characters disappear to resurface in other Rougon-Macqaurt novels， their disappearances follow economic logics that enhance The Fortune of the Rougons itself。 It's also at times a very poignant novel。 Second， while it does serve as an origin story for the Rougon-Macqaurt family and novels， it is a compelling fable in its own right of the founding of the second empire: a comedy of origins， a mock-epic in which ideals are all feigned and victory and defeat are as meaningless as the motives of those petty enough to act。 So begins the era of Louis-Napoleon。 。。。more

اولین رمان مجموعه بیست کتابی روگن-ماکار، کتاب تلخیه。 کتاب روایتگر سرکوب خونین قیام مردم جنوب فرانسه بعد از کودتا و به قدرت رسیدن ناپلئون سومه و داستان اجداد خاندان روگن و ماکار رو در این بستر تاریخی روایت میکنه。 اکثر شخصیت ها پست، حقیر، طماع، حریص و خودخواهن جوری که نفس آدم از شدت جمع شدن تمام این خصایص در این حیوانات انسان نما میگیره！ بهتره قبل از خوندن این کتاب یه دور خلاصه انقلاب فرانسه و جمهوری دوم و ناپلئون ها خونده بشه تا از گیج شدن زیاد جلوگیری بشه هرچند مقدمه هم توضیح خوبی داده

While this is certainly not the best of Zola， it is still well worth the reading as the first in the Rougon-Macquart series and as such provides the background to the characters in all that follows。 These are not fun reads however as Zola's purpose was to lay bare the evils of French society during the Second Empire。 The Boxall's 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die group is currently doing a Scavenger Hunt and one of the goals is to "Read a book with a character you find irritating。" It is p While this is certainly not the best of Zola， it is still well worth the reading as the first in the Rougon-Macquart series and as such provides the background to the characters in all that follows。 These are not fun reads however as Zola's purpose was to lay bare the evils of French society during the Second Empire。 The Boxall's 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die group is currently doing a Scavenger Hunt and one of the goals is to "Read a book with a character you find irritating。" It is probably good that The Fortune of the Rougons is not on the 1001 list and therefore ineligible for the Scavenger Hunt as absolutely every character in this historical drama is highly irritating！ 。。。more

Zola is up there with the Gods for me， so it seems so wrong to give a score of mediocrity。 This is the introduction to his epic 20 novel cycle， it seems to exist to just flesh out his slightly pseudo scientific theories of where sins arise and how ancestry and bloodline flavours your moral compass。 The worst bits of Zola， in other words。 The down and dirty explication of reality that marks his masterpieces still arise in hints， you do get a sense of the pomposity of small rural towns in the hot Zola is up there with the Gods for me， so it seems so wrong to give a score of mediocrity。 This is the introduction to his epic 20 novel cycle， it seems to exist to just flesh out his slightly pseudo scientific theories of where sins arise and how ancestry and bloodline flavours your moral compass。 The worst bits of Zola， in other words。 The down and dirty explication of reality that marks his masterpieces still arise in hints， you do get a sense of the pomposity of small rural towns in the hot South， it's highly stratified class structures and the ridiculous 19th century French political scene with its three Empire periods and three Republic periods， but it's shadows of moral outrage compared to。the chunks of bloody meat served up in his major works。A strange structure， we follow 2 young teenage characters then we get flashbacks to a series of fantastic character studies and then the focus switches again。 Like the genius he is， frothing with ideas， trying to get it all to start it reads like the literary equivalent of that moment the orchestra warms up。 The disorganised din before the symphony。 。。。more

Rougon-Macquart。 The novel is partly an origin story， with a huge cast of characters swarming around - many of whom become the central figures of later novels in the series - and partly an account of the December 1851 coup d'état that created the French Second Empire under Napoleon III as experienced in a large provincial town in southern France。 The title refers not only to the "fortune" chased by protagonists Pierre and Felicité Rougon， but also to the fortunes of the various disparate family members Zola introduces， whose lives are of central importance to later books in the series。After a stirring opening on the eve of the coup d'état， involving an idealistic young village couple joining up with the republican militia in the middle of the night， Zola then spends the next few chapters going back in time to pre-Revolutionary Provence， and proceeds to lay the foundations for the entire Rougon-Macquart cycle， committing himself to what would become the next twenty-two years of his life's work。 The fictional town of Plassans （loosely based on the real city of Aix-en-Provence， where Zola grew up） is established as the setting for the novel and described in intimate detail， and then we are introduced to the eccentric heroine Adelaide Fouque， later known as "Tante Dide"， who becomes the common ancestor for both the Rougon and Macquart families。 Her legitimate son from her short marriage to her late husband， a labourer named Rougon who worked on Dide's land， is forced to grow up alongside two illegitimate children — a boy and a girl — from Dide's later romance with the smuggler， poacher and alcoholic Macquart， while the ageing Dide slides further and further into a state of mental illness and borderline senile dementia。 From this premise， the next nineteen novels all get their central protagonists and to a certain extent their themes。The narrative continues along double lines， following both "branches" of the family。 We see Pierre Rougon （the legitimate son） in his attempts to disinherit his Macquart half-siblings， his marriage to Felicité Puech， the voraciously ambitious daughter of a local merchant， and their continued failure to establish the fortune， fame and renown they seek， despite their greed and relatively comfortable lifestyles。 Approaching old age， the Rougon couple finally admit defeat and settle， crushed， into their lower middle class destinies， until by a remarkable stroke of luck their eldest son Eugène reports from Paris that he has some news that they might find interesting。 Eugène has become one of the closest allies of the future Emperor Napoleon III and informs his parents that a coup is imminent。 Having been effectively given insider information about which side to back in the coming revolution， the Rougons then make a series of seemingly bold moves to show their loyal and steadfast support for Napoleon III， winning the admiration of the most influential people in the town， mostly royalists who are themselves afraid of showing too much commitment for fear of backing the "wrong horse" and losing their standing and fortune。The narrative then switches over to the Macquart side of the family， whose grim working-class struggles to survive are juxtaposed keenly with the Rougons' seemingly trivial quest for greater wealth and influence in genteel drawing-room society。 Descended from a drunken ne'er-do-well and a madwoman， Zola effectively predestines the Macquarts to lives of toil and misery。 Zola's theories of heredity， laid out in the original preface to this novel， were a cornerstone of his entire philosophy and a major reason for his embarking on the mammoth Rougon-Macquart project in the first place in order to illustrate them。 Largely discredited nowadays， the theories are largely "present but unseen" in most of the novels in the Rougon-Macquart cycle， allowing those books to be enjoyed without the overshadowing effect of Zola's somewhat suspect scientific ideas。 Due to the original story nature of La Fortune des Rougon， the theories are placed much more to the fore， and can appear somewhat heavy-handed as a result。A third branch of the family， the Mourets， descended from Macquart and Dide's daughter， are then introduced before the novel's focus is brought back to the "present"， the night of the coup， via a quite brilliantly told love story。 The idealistic but naïve Silvère Mouret falls madly in love with the innocent Miette Chantegreil， and after a long courtship they decide to join up with the republicans to fight the coup。 The rest of the novel then picks up from where the opening chapter left off， and from then on is basically a dual narrative telling the story of the old Rougon couple and their increasingly Machiavellian machinations to get themselves into a position of fortune and respect in Plassans， juxtaposed with Silvère and Miette's continuing love story and the doomed republican militia's disastrous attempt to take the town back。 Eventually， the Rougons exploit their half-brother Antoine Macquart into inadvertently helping crush the republican threat， and they achieve their life's ambition， fortune and favour。 For Silvère and Miette， who committed themselves so completely to a doomed cause， there can be no such happy ending and Zola wisely leaves their half of the story at a bleak dead end。 。。。more
